The open-air cinema in Kimolos that’s going viral – A magical experience between rocks and sea

Set in a natural “amphitheater,” the cinema’s screen has managed to charm and win the hearts of both film lovers and non-film lovers alike on social media

Newsroom June 25 02:30

In the heart of the Aegean, on the idyllic island of Kimolos, there is a place that combines nature with a love for cinema: the island’s open-air cinema that hosts screenings in stunning settings, with a video from one of its showings now circulating widely online.

Set in a natural “amphitheater,” the cinema’s screen has captured the imagination of social media users looking for something different for their summer nights. The scene created by the island’s rock formations, together with the moonlight and the sound of the waves, makes the open-air cinema experience truly unique.

Kalisperitis: The first star of the sky
We’re talking about “Cine Kalisperitis,” Kimolos’s traveling open-air cinema organized by the volunteer group “Kimolistes” and offered free of charge to all—both permanent residents and visitors. As the Kimolistes explain, “its name comes from the first star visible at sunset, which on our island is called Kalisperitis.” The cinema was inaugurated in 2014 and operates during the peak tourist season—June, July, August, and September—with one or two screenings per week, depending on the weather.

This season’s premiere took place on June 19 with the film The Return, at the beautiful bay of Rema where the sea-carved rocks have formed the shape of an “Elephant.”

As the Kimolistes shared, “In recent days we’ve been receiving your messages daily on Instagram asking about our next screening. From 3/7 to 6/7/25 we’ll be showing the film Little England with actor Andreas Konstantinou attending. We’ll announce the exact location and time two or three days in advance.”

If you find yourself in Kimolos this summer, don’t miss the chance to experience this. The open-air cinema between the rocks and beaches isn’t just a movie screening; it’s a special evening that blends art with the beauty of nature.
