OPEKEPE: Conflict with closed cards for the preliminary investigation

Maximou raises the "decibels" against PASOK and weighs its options for the establishment of the Pre-Investigation Committee

Newsroom July 4 08:34

“The gauntlet” to PASOK‘s straight shots is now being thrown down by the government, with Pavlos Marinakis and Adonis Georgiadis broadcasting yesterday in “hard rock” rhythms against the party of Charilaou Trikoupis. The Health Minister even took direct aim at Androulakis, speaking of “high patrons” who have the president of PASOK, while Marinakis responded to Androulakis’ harsh reports about a “criminal organization” orchestrated by Mitsotakis himself.

“This government, with a clear mandate from the prime minister, is the first to carry out serious cross-checks, having blocked a series of payments with specific taxpayer identification numbers. The figures referring to the period from 2019 until the European Public Prosecutor came along show that not only is the opposition line “funny”, “but did not know; but was caught with the goat on its back?” but that the long-standing pathogenesis was known throughout the political system, as well as the Prime Minister’s will to deal with such phenomena,” they stress from the government, while wanting to respond to the argument that “they knew, but did not act.”

At the same time, the government through Mr Marinakis also responded yesterday to the now infamous letter Semandrakos sent to the Maximos building at the end of 2023, saying that of the 9,309 “red” VATs that were blocked and not paid, it sent over 700 VATs from the disputed ones to the prosecution.

In fact, Marinakis insisted that the Greek judiciary was checking OPEKEPE before the European Public Prosecutor’s Office. “The data therefore show that 5,200 natural persons and some legal entities are controlled by the services and by the judiciary, many of them, from 2019 to date for cases of illegal subsidies (persons beyond the cases investigated by the European Prosecutor). They show that 2,365 persons are being massively checked for illegal payments with false affidavits, since 2019, that is, with complaints in our days,” the government spokesman said.

Opinions on the Pre-Inquiry

However, apart from the accusations against PASOK that it is attempting to instrumentalize this case, as in the case of Tempi, even erasing its party past, the government is also called upon to decide what to do with the parliamentary management of Voridis and Aygenakis. Both insist to their interlocutors that they have done nothing wrong, much less anything criminal.

The mood of the day, however, is troubling government officials who are not “shutting down” the preliminary investigation scenario, although there are conflicting views within the Maximos Mansion. A final decision has not been made and will not be made before it becomes clear how many proposals will be made by the opposition parties and with a description of which offences.

Political arguments exist both for the impeachment and for the non-impeachment of Mr Voridis and Mr Avgenakis and are recorded in Maximou’s internal dialogue, although everyone agrees that any criminal offences are at best “marginal” based on the case file.

Yesterday, however, Larissa MP, Maximos Charakopoulos, became the second “blue” MP after Stelios Petsas to appear openly in a Preliminary Investigation (Alpha 9.89), while the Speaker of the Parliament, Nikitas Kaklamanis, called on the opposition parties to move quickly, but said that the Parliament will not close in August if a proposal to set up a Pre-Investigation Committee comes in the last week of July.
