Demoscopic shifts in ND and cross-party tensions over OPEKEPE – ND tables independent proposal for preliminary investigation at Maximos

While the government appears prepared to wait for the opposition's next move, internal discussions are ongoing about the most effective course of action

Newsroom July 8 07:45

The prospect of PASOK filing a proposal for a Pre-inquiry into the OPEKEPE case by the end of this week or at the latest by the beginning of next week for Makis Voridis and Lefteris Avgenakis sets the timeframe for the government’s reaction.

PASOK will move for two crimes, those of abetting and aiding and abetting disloyalty, for the former ministers, PASOK President’s legal adviser Michalis Kaklamanis said on Monday morning (Alpha 9.89).

In any case, the Maximos Mansion seems willing to wait for the opposition’s move, although at the same time, a discussion on the best possible solution is going on within the government.

According to protothema.gr, Kyriakos Mitsotakis did not make his colleagues particularly wiser at yesterday’s morning coffee. On the other hand, according to the same line of information, it seems that the New Democracy scenario seems to be fading, that New Democracy will do nothing and simply reject a proposal by PASOK on the proposed felonies, even though it is not yet clear whether there will be another proposal from the minor opposition parties. This raises the question of what the majority will do, as it seems equally unlikely that ND will agree to a felony proposal “package” for Mr Voridis and Mr Avgenakis.

In this light, the scenario of ND moving autonomously to set up a Primary Investigation Committee even for a misdemeanor for the two former ministers has also been put on the table. Government spokesman Pavlos Marinakis may have said yesterday that the “Triandopoulos model” is not general and each case is of different evaluation, but it seems that there are voices in Maximou saying that “somehow” the case should be investigated further, without going to extremes.

On the other hand, it is a given that the description of some offense will not be easily manageable in the case of Makis Voridis, who has taken political responsibility but denies any criminal dimension to the case. And Lefteris Avgenakis refuses to even enter into the discussion that his case will be separated from that of Makis Voridis.

“Bells” but no wounds

Yesterday’s Opinion Poll survey by Opinion Poll for Action24, however, came to confirm the picture that the Mega Maximou has from its rolling surveys that the OPEKEPE “braked” the rise of the Southwest and caused some “hacks”, but in no way the deep “wounds” of the case of Tempi. The telling difference in this regard is said to be the entrenched view of the public that the field of agricultural aid has been a den of mismanagement over time.

More specifically, ND scores 29.8% from 30.4% in May’s vote estimate. Kyriakos Mitsotakis registers bigger losses than ND in the question about the most suitable prime minister, garnering 27.4% from 30.4% in May. As for the “account” for the administration, over 92% agree that the government has political responsibility for the OPEKEPE affair, but interestingly, 47.5% of citizens believe that all governments over time are responsible for the existence of subsidy pathologies, a 30.5% share the blame solely with the ruling party, while 20.4% say that state pathologies are responsible.

It should be noted that citizens appear highly skeptical of the measures announced by the government for the OPEKEPE, even on the commitment to return the amounts that some people received illegally, with percentages in the individual questions exceeding 50%.
