Dangerous cocktail of heat, wind and drought from today: The “red” areas, where the temperature will reach in Athens

In some places the temperature will reach 40 degrees Celsius in the coming days, with stronger north winds in the Aegean Sea

Newsroom July 14 10:59

A difficult week begins today, Monday, as large parts of Greece will get more of the explosive combination of high temperatures, strong winds and prolonged drought.

As for the weather, temperatures are expected to be at high levels this week, with Giannis Kallianos making it clear that this is not a heatwave, but the familiar summer heat of July, with values that in some continental areas may reach up to 40 degrees Celsius locally.

At the same time, stronger northerly winds (wind chill) will blow, making the next few days dangerous for fires.

According to the meteorologist, temperatures of 36-38°C are expected in several continental areas of the country, while locally they may reach 39°C or 40°C, especially:

– in Thessaly

– in Boeotia

– and in Fthiotida

For Athens, the maximum temperatures of the week are expected to be around 37-38 degrees Celsius.

The weather on Monday, according to the National Weather Service

Winds will blow in the west northwest 3 to 5 Beaufort, in the east 4 to 6 Beaufort and occasionally in the central and southern Aegean Sea locally 7 Beaufort.

The temperature will rise slightly further. It will reach 36 to 37 degrees Celsius on the mainland and 38 degrees Celsius in some parts of the eastern Sterea and the eastern Peloponnese, 34 degrees Celsius in the Ionian Sea, 35 to 36 degrees Celsius in the East Aegean islands, the Dodecanese and southern Crete and 31 to 32 degrees Celsius in the rest of the island country.

Meanwhile, today, Monday, in Attica, Boeotia, Evia, Crete and the Aegean islands, the fire risk will be very high to extreme.

Meteo.gr noted that there will be a significant deterioration of pyrometeorological conditions in the country from Sunday, July 13.

This is due to high temperatures and atmospheric dry conditions in the country from Sunday to Sunday July 20. Strong northerly winds in the eastern mainland (including Evros) and the Aegean Sea from Sunday to Wednesday 16 July. Furthermore, it is due to the significant increase in flammability with dead vegetation favouring the start and rapid spread of fire even during the night hours.
