“Patriots for Europe” on the Turkish invasion of Cyprus: The pain of the missing continues to haunt the country

"A black day for Hellenism and our Cyprus,” wrote, among other things, Aphrodite Latinopoulou, a member of the European parliamentary group, in a post

Newsroom July 20 04:03

On the occasion of the 51st anniversary of the Turkish invasion of Cyprus (20/7), the European group “Patriots for Europe,” to which the Greek MEP Aphrodite Latinopoulou belongs, delivered its own message for this “dark anniversary.”

Specifically, the president of “Voice of Reason” made a post today on Instagram, in which various members of the “Patriots for Europe” party expressed their views on the 51 years since the Turkish invasion of Cyprus.

“Tomorrow marks a black day for Hellenism and our Cyprus… I am deeply moved but also proud that the European group I belong to, on the occasion of this tragic anniversary, ‘Patriots for Europe’ (14 countries in total), all came together to create a video slap against Turkey,” wrote Aphrodite Latinopoulou in her post.

“The pain of the missing continues to haunt Cyprus and Europe. Despite repeated calls from the international community for transparency, Turkey insists on denying the right to justice and reconciliation,” says Italian MEP and member of the European group Paolo Borchia in the video.

Latinopoulou’s full post:

“Tomorrow marks a black day for Hellenism and our Cyprus.
20/07/1974 was the date when the Turkish invasion began, resulting in massacres, the displacement of thousands of Greeks, and, of course, today, 50 years later, almost half of Cyprus remains under Turkish occupation.

I am deeply moved but also proud that the European group I belong to, on the occasion of this tragic anniversary, ‘Patriots for Europe’ (14 countries in total), ALL came together to create a video slap against Turkey, all saying – WE DO NOT FORGET. Something like this has never happened before in Europe.
