First major wave of August vacationers – Heavy traffic in Piraeus, ships depart full

Delays on roads leading to the port, increased movement at intercity bus terminals

Newsroom August 2 09:10

With passenger loads reaching nearly 100% and ferries departing one after another, the port of Piraeus is at the heart of the mass August vacation exodus. At the same time, traffic problems are already being reported around the Skaramagas area, and congestion continues on the roads surrounding the Piraeus port.

Since early in the morning, crowds have been gathering at the passenger terminals of Piraeus, with thousands of travelers boarding ferries bound primarily for Paros, Santorini, and Naxos. The Cycladic routes are recording the highest occupancy rates, while many people are opting for short getaways due to the increased cost of vacations this year.

This first major wave of departures is peaking this weekend, with port authorities on full alert and security measures reinforced.

The surge in holiday travel is not limited to ferry routes. At the intercity KTEL bus terminals of Attica, buses have been departing continuously and fully packed, while the platforms were crowded from early morning.

Meanwhile, major highways around Athens are experiencing serious traffic issues. The Athens–Corinth and Athens Avenues are reporting heavy congestion in both directions. According to traffic police, delays are particularly intense near the Skaramagas area, affecting the smooth flow of vehicles.

Additionally, traffic remains high around the Piraeus port, as vacationers continue to arrive, rushing to catch their ferries.
