John S. Latsis Foundation: Donated a state-of-the-art mobile blood donation unit to the Hellenic Red Cross

The unit will fill a critical operational gap, enabling immediate and safe blood collection outside hospitals, as recommended by the World Health Organization, particularly in emergency situations

Newsroom August 5 10:00

The Hellenic Red Cross (HRC), with its long-standing history and commitment to organizing voluntary blood donations in Greece, has been operationally reinforced with a new state-of-the-art Mobile Blood Donation Unit, generously donated by the John S. Latsis Public Benefit Foundation.

The handover ceremony took place on Monday, July 28, 2025, in the forecourt of the Zappeion Hall, featuring a symbolic first blood donation in the new HRC unit, attended by HRC President Dr. Antonios Avgerinos, Foundation representative and Program & Donation Manager Ms. Natalia Andronikou, as well as numerous volunteers from all sectors of the HRC.

This Mobile Blood Donation Unit will cover a crucial operational need, offering the capacity for immediate and safe blood collection outside hospital settings, as also advised by the World Health Organization — particularly in emergency cases.

It is a modern vehicle fully equipped with all necessary medical and technical specifications, capable of reaching even the most remote and inaccessible regions of the country. It offers flexibility, operational readiness, and improved accessibility for those wishing to donate blood.

Notably, the extensive experience and know-how of the HRC in the field of voluntary blood donation has proven essential during times of crisis, such as the COVID-19 pandemic, during which dozens of external blood drives were organized to meet hospital needs. The HRC also places strong emphasis on the most critical times of the year — Christmas, Easter, and summer — when blood reserves tend to drop significantly.

HRC President Dr. Antonios Avgerinos stated:

“The generous donation by the John S. Latsis Public Benefit Foundation is a symbol of life, social contribution, and solidarity. This significant support from the Foundation is a testament to its recognition and endorsement of the HRC’s work in voluntary blood donation. It substantially strengthens our mission, offering immediate access to vital services and promoting the message of voluntary blood donation across every corner of the country.

The Mobile Blood Donation Unit reinforces the HRC’s role as a key pillar in the national effort to achieve blood self-sufficiency, taking on even the most demanding missions in remote areas of Greece. This is a vehicle of hope, traveling throughout the country, spreading the message of voluntary blood donation and human generosity.”
