Thessaloniki International Fair package: Tax cuts, housing, and measures up to €2 billion in government plans

Government unveils €2 billion plan to boost economy, cut taxes, and support housing at Thessaloniki Fair

Newsroom August 14 11:12

The government is preparing a benefits package worth up to €2 billion for the Thessaloniki International Fair (TIF), with €1.5 billion in available fiscal space coming from a budget surplus and a contingency clause. The plan is focused on the middle class and housing.

Package Overview
The finance ministry is getting ready to announce the package at the Thessaloniki Fair in September. The estimated total size could reach up to €2 billion.

Budget Surplus Creates Room
Preliminary data from the state budget (January–June 2025) show €2.3 billion more in revenues than expected and €1.9 billion in savings on expenditures. On a modified cash basis, the primary balance exceeded the target by €788 million.

Extra Funding and Contingency Clause
Thanks to strong budget performance and the activation of a €500 million contingency clause, the government has €1.5 billion in fiscal space for the DETH package, potentially rising to €2 billion.

Focus on Middle Class and Housing
The proposed measures are expected to include tax cuts for the middle class, subsidies for families, revised property criteria, support for freelancers, and interventions in the housing market—all framed as development measures rather than mere handouts.
