Trump called the Norwegian Finance Minister about the tariffs and… the Nobel Prize

The American president doesn’t seem to forget the suggestion made by many that he deserves an award for his peace initiatives

When Donald Trump phoned Norway’s Finance Minister in July to discuss trade tariffs, he also asked about the Nobel Peace Prize, according to the Norwegian financial newspaper Dagens Naeringsliv.

Some countries — including Israel, Pakistan, and Cambodia — have nominated Trump for the Nobel Prize for his mediation in peace agreements or ceasefires. The president himself has also stated that he deserves this highest honor, which has been awarded to four former U.S. presidents.

“Out of the blue, while Finance Minister Jens Stoltenberg was walking down the street in Oslo, Donald Trump called him,” Dagens Naeringsliv reported, citing unnamed sources.

“He wanted the Nobel Prize — and to discuss tariffs,” the paper added.

Hundreds of nominations are submitted each year. Nobel laureates are chosen by the Norwegian Nobel Committee, whose five members are appointed by Norway’s parliament in accordance with the will of 19th-century Swedish industrialist Alfred Nobel. The announcement is made in October in Oslo.

The Norwegian paper revealed that this was not the first time Trump had brought up the prize in a conversation with Stoltenberg, a former NATO Secretary General.

According to the report, Stoltenberg said the phone call was to discuss trade tariffs and economic cooperation ahead of a conversation between the U.S. president and Norwegian Prime Minister Jonas Støre.

When asked whether Trump had brought up the Nobel Prize, Stoltenberg replied: “I will not go into further detail about the content of the conversation.”

White House officials, including U.S. Treasury Secretary Scott Besent and U.S. Trade Representative Jamison Greer, participated in the call, Stoltenberg noted.

On July 31, the White House announced 15% tariffs on imports from Norway, the same rate applied to the European Union.

On Wednesday, Stoltenberg stated that Norway and the U.S. are still in talks regarding the tariffs.

The White House, Norway’s Finance Ministry, and the Norwegian Nobel Committee did not respond to Reuters’ requests for comment.
