Russian drone explodes and falls in a field in eastern Poland — Warsaw calls it a “provocation” by Moscow

Windows shattered in several homes from the explosion, but no one was injured

Newsroom August 20 10:30

A military unmanned aerial vehicle that exploded overnight in eastern Poland did not carry a warhead but contained only a small amount of explosives and resembled more of a decoy, local news agency PAP reported, citing a source close to the Ministry of Defense.

“The examination of the explosion indicates that the object is most likely a military unmanned aerial vehicle,” regional prosecutor of Lublin, Grzegorz Trusiewicz, told reporters.

Shortly after, Polish Foreign Ministry spokesperson Pawel Wronski told Reuters that the object, which landed in eastern Ukraine, is a Russian version of the Iranian Shahed drone, while Polish Defense Minister Władysław Kosiniak-Kamysz called it a “provocation” by Russia. “Once again, we are dealing with a provocation by the Russian Federation, with a Russian unmanned aerial vehicle. We are at a critical moment as discussions about peace (in Ukraine) are ongoing,” he told journalists.

Police had earlier announced that an unknown object fell in a field in the village of Osiny in the eastern Lublin province, just over 100 kilometers from the Ukrainian border and about 90 kilometers from Belarus.

The explosion shattered windows in several homes, but no injuries were reported, PAP said.

Police said they found burnt metal and plastic debris at the site, and that corn was burned in an area of 8–10 meters in diameter around the impact site.

Air raid warning sirens sounded for about an hour over the border areas of Volyn and Lviv in Ukraine around midnight local time, according to posts by the Ukrainian military on Telegram.

Poland has been on high alert for objects entering its airspace since a stray Ukrainian missile hit the village of Przewodów in southern Poland in 2022, killing two people.

Deputy Prime Minister Władysław Kosiniak-Kamysz, who also serves as Defense Minister, said the incident bears similarities to cases in which Russian drones flew over Lithuania and Romania and that there could be a connection with ongoing efforts to end the war in Ukraine.

The Russian embassy in Warsaw did not immediately respond to a request for comment via email.
