Weather: “Express” heat wave today – Which areas will see 40C, where it will rain

At 38.6 degrees the temperature yesterday in Skala Messinia - The forecast for the weekend

Weather with high temperature and humidity will prevail for another 24 hours, with mercury gradually dropping from Saturday. Yesterday the thermometer exceeded 38 degrees Celsius, while today the mercury is expected to “climb” to 40 degrees Celsius in the eastern mainland. However, until noon in the northern Ionian Sea (Corfu – Diapontian Islands – Paxos) and the coastal areas of Epirus, according to the National Weather Service (EMY), intense rain and thunderstorms are forecasted in places.

The areas with the highest temperatures – likely to reach 42°C locally – will be Fthiotida, Boeotia, Attica, Argolida, Arcadia, Laconia, according to a forecast by MEGA meteorologist Christina Rigou.

For his part, Dimitris Ziakopoulos speaks of “a bometric low in the northern Adriatic, accompanied by a cold front extending as far as Tunisia, moving northeast and the new 24-hour period is expected to cause local rain and thunderstorms in NW Greece, West Thessaly and central-western Macedonia. It should be noted that in the North. Ionian and coastal areas of Epirus, the phenomena will be intense in places. Winds will blow SW to NW 4 to 6 Beaufort and the highest temperatures (38 to 39 and possibly 40 degrees) will be recorded in Thessaly, E. Sterea and E. Peloponnese”.

“On Saturday (23/8), local rain is likely to occur in the afternoon in the mountainous areas of Epirus, Macedonia and Thrace. Winds will blow N-NW 4 to 6 Beaufort and the heat will subside across the country. On Sunday (24/8), there is a slight chance of localized showers in Macedonia and E. Sterea-Euboea. Winds will blow N-NE with intensity up to 6 Beaufort and the temperature will drop slightly,” the meteorologist continues.

“On Monday (25/8), a few showers are likely to occur in the afternoon in Macedonia. N-NE winds in eastern and southern Greece will strengthen by one Beaufort and the temperature will not exceed 35 degrees. On Tuesday (26/8), no rain is forecast. Winds will blow north in the west at 3 to 4 Beaufort and in the east at 5 to 6 Beaufort. The temperature in the Ionian Sea and the mainland will rise by 1 to 2 degrees,” it concludes.

At 38.6 degrees yesterday in Skala Messinia

High temperatures were recorded in the country on Thursday 21/08, with the maximum temperature in the Peloponnese exceeding 38°C. According to the network of automatic weather stations of the National Observatory of Athens / meteo.gr, on Thursday 21/08 the maximum temperature was recorded in Skala Messinia at 38.6 °C followed by Petrokefali Heraklion at 37.7 °C.

Today’s weather

The weather will be clear with cloudy skies in the west and north. Local showers will occur in the northern Ionian Sea in the morning hours and possibly in the evening hours in the western mainland. African dust is favoured mainly in the Peloponnese, Sterea and Crete.

The temperature in Western Macedonia will range from 17 to 32 degrees Celsius, in the rest of Macedonia and Thrace from 18 to 37, in Thessaly from 20 to 39, in Epirus from 19 to 34, in Central Greece from 20 to 36, in Evia locally 40 degrees, in the Peloponnese from 21 to 37, in the Ionian islands from 19 to 32, in the islands of the North and East Aegean from 17 to 36, in the Cyclades and the Dodecanese from 19 to 34, in Rhodes from 24 to 36 and in Crete from 21 to 37, locally 38 degrees Celsius.

The winds will blow from the west southwest from 3 to 5 and in the south locally 6 Beaufort.

In Attica sunshine is forecasted. Winds will be variable 2 to 4 Beaufort, with strengthening from the afternoon. The temperature will range from 22 to 37 degrees.

In Thessaloniki the weather will be clear with local clouds at noon and in the afternoon. The winds will be variable 2 to 4 Beaufort. The temperature will range from 20 to 35 degrees.

The weather on Saturday, August 23

Generally clear weather, with scattered clouds in the central and northern mainland in the midday – afternoon hours, when mainly in Macedonia there will be local rain.In the morning hours in the west the visibility will be limited and there will be local fog.

Winds will blow northwest 3 to 5 Beaufort, and in the Aegean Sea locally up to 6 Beaufort.

The temperature will drop and will reach 32 to 34 degrees Celsius in the western and northern continents and 35 to 37 degrees Celsius in the rest of the continents. In the eastern Aegean islands and Crete it will reach 35 degrees Celsius, while in the rest of the island country it will not exceed 29 to 31 degrees Celsius.
