Record number of meltemi winds this summer – A total of 61 days of strong winds in the Aegean

Data from the Tinos weather station highlight the duration and intensity of the phenomenon

Newsroom September 4 03:30

The summer of 2025 is being recorded as one of the windiest in recent decades, with the highest number of strong meltemi days in the last 17 years, according to meteo of the National Observatory of Athens.

The analysis covers July and August, months traditionally characterized by strong northerly winds. This year, there were 16 days with strong winds in July and 21 in August – a total of 37 days. The corresponding 17-year averages are 17 days for July and 19 for August, which shows that this August exceeded the long-term norm.

The measurement criterion is a maximum wind gust of at least 50 km/h, as recorded at the National Observatory of Athens/meteo.gr station in Tinos (Town Hall). Between 2009 and August 2025, the number of strong-wind days in July–August ranged from 20 days (in 2014) to 47 days (in 2016).

June 2025 proved particularly noteworthy. Although June usually records only a few strong meltemi days, this year saw 24 – the highest June figure of the past 17 years. In fact, the last four years show a steady increase in the frequency of the phenomenon for this month.

Overall, across June–August, there were 61 days with strong winds, placing the summer of 2025 at the top of the last 17 years.
