Newsroom September 11 01:04

New details have emerged about the fatal accident that occurred early Wednesday morning in Malia, as shocking video footage captures the exact moment of the deadly crash.

In the footage broadcast by CRETE TV, the 27-year-old Egyptian is seen driving at high speed, crossing into the opposite lane on Grammatikaki Street.

There, he crashes head-on into the 23-year-old Greek woman, who was riding another motorbike. The collision was so violent that the young woman lost her life instantly, despite the fact that she was wearing a helmet.

The accident happened around 05:00 on a narrow road, adding to the drama of the images. According to reports, the 23-year-old did not have a driver’s license and was working at an entertainment venue in the area.

The 27-year-old driver of the second motorbike, who also did not have a license and was not wearing a helmet, was arrested.

Greek police (EL.AS.) have launched a preliminary investigation into the exact circumstances of the tragedy, which has shocked the local community and once again highlights the serious road safety issues on Crete, an island that continues to count heavy losses on its roads.
