Hardalias: Tourism is a key driver of growth and outward orientation for Attica

Attica has unique advantages that allow it to take a leading role internationally, not only as a city-break destination but also as a Metropolitan Region, stated the Regional Governor of Attica

Newsroom September 15 03:50

The Regional Governor of Attica, Nikos Hardalias, held a meeting with the Board of Directors of SETE (Greek Tourism Confederation), in the presence of Dimitris Fragakis, President of “New Metropolitan Attica S.A.”. The discussion focused on strategic initiatives for the further development and strengthening of Attica’s international appeal as a tourism destination.

Specifically, the Regional Governor presented the key priorities of the Region, which include:

  • Implementing a comprehensive regional tourism promotion plan,
  • Linking tourism with culture, the environment, and citizens’ daily lives,
  • Enhancing the destination’s competitiveness through sustainable infrastructure and quality services.

As Mr. Hardalias emphasized, Attica possesses unique comparative advantages that allow it to stand out internationally—not only as a city-break destination but also as a Metropolitan Region capable of offering experiences 365 days a year.

After the meeting, the Regional Governor of Attica stated:
“Tourism is a key driver of growth and outward orientation for Attica, the capital Region of our country. Through strategic planning, meaningful collaborations, and targeted actions, we can strengthen our destination’s identity and offer visitors a unique experience worthy of our history, culture, and natural heritage.

In cooperation with our Region’s development agency, ‘New Metropolitan Attica S.A.’, with SETE, and with all relevant stakeholders, we are moving forward with a plan to ensure that our Metropolitan Attica takes a leading role internationally as a high-quality and sustainable destination, for everyone, all year round.”

Mr. Hardalias also highlighted that Attica is the first Greek Region to establish a Destination Management and Marketing Organization (DMMO) under the brand name “The Greater Athens Region”—which also serves as the core slogan of its tourism policy—as a modern tool for holistic management and promotion of the tourism product in every corner of the Attica basin worldwide.

Finally, the Regional Governor placed particular emphasis on linking Attica’s valuable cultural heritage, both ancient and modern, with tourism as a lever for sustainable growth and development.

He cited as a prime example the signing of the Integrated Territorial Investment (ITI) of €40 million with the Ministry of Culture, which sets in motion the upgrading of cultural infrastructures and services, the protection and promotion of monuments, the strengthening of cultural events, and the expansion of cultural initiatives across Attica.
