Mitsotakis: Very soon we will establish marine parks in the Ionian and Cyclades

“The Greek government is fully committed to the goal of protecting the marine environment,” said the Prime Minister at an event screening the documentary Ocean with David Attenborough

Newsroom October 3 10:56

“The Greek government is fully committed to the goal of protecting the marine environment. We have already announced and opened for public consultation the first plans for the creation of two large marine parks in the Ionian Islands and the southern Cyclades, which we aim to establish as soon as possible, always in cooperation with non-governmental organizations, local communities, and especially with those who will directly benefit from such protection initiatives,” emphasized Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis at an event for the screening of the documentary Ocean with David Attenborough, organized by Revive Our Ocean and National Geographic Pristine Seas, in collaboration with the Cyclades Preservation Fund, at the Athens Concert Hall. He also highlighted that tomorrow he will be in Amorgos to present and discuss with local fishermen his initiative “Amorgorama.”

“Therefore, the message of this film, as well as the message of ‘Amorgorama,’ deserves to spread throughout Greece. Our goal is for what today is the exception, the unique example, to be able to multiply. But this will not happen without systematic awareness and without your contribution. And I am referring primarily to civil society, to non-governmental organizations,” he noted.

“Know that in the government you will find a consistent supporter. I do not underestimate the difficulties; I am very well aware of the risk that protected areas could remain only on paper. But I want you to know that personally I remain fully committed to the governmental goals as they have been presented.

And I am confident that with your help we will succeed not only in being at the forefront in Europe on issues of protecting our seas but, most importantly, in creating a new model, a new path for local communities, for our islands—especially our small islands—and a more optimistic future than what you will see in the first half of the film,” stated Kyriakos Mitsotakis.
