At the Sharm el-Sheikh summit on Gaza after Trump’s invitation today, Mitsotakis: Greece will be there along with Cyprus

“A response to those who want to see a Greece isolated and miserable,” wrote the Prime Minister regarding the invitation from the US President

Newsroom October 13 08:36

Kyriakos Mitsotakis will be in Egypt at noon to take part in the Sharm el-Sheikh summit on Gaza, following an invitation extended to Greece and Cyprus by U.S. President Donald Trump.

A little earlier, the Prime Minister will have his regular monthly meeting with the President of the Hellenic Republic, Konstantinos Tasoulas.

“Greece is one of the European countries that will be there, along with Cyprus. Our presence is yet another response to those who want to see a Greece isolated and miserable,” Mr. Mitsotakis wrote in his Sunday post.

Specifically, regarding the content of the agreement, after referring to “a historic moment, as for the first time a realistic prospect of peace is being created in the wider region,” he praised the American President, writing that “this diplomatic success is credited as an initiative to President Trump, who brought all regional stakeholders into a common framework of agreement.”

“It is proven that persistence in negotiation can bring results,” added Kyriakos Mitsotakis, stressing that “the release of hostages and detainees, as well as the commitment to uphold the ceasefire, form the foundation of the first phase of the peace plan. The challenge now is the implementation of the agreement. Because peace is confirmed only through actions.”

Leaders from the Arab world and the West are expected to attend the summit, including those of Qatar, Jordan, the United Arab Emirates, Saudi Arabia, the United Kingdom, France, Germany, Italy, as well as the President of the European Council and the UN Secretary-General.

Cyprus’s role and the “Amalthea” initiative

The participation of the Republic of Cyprus in the Sharm el-Sheikh Peace Summit constitutes, according to a written statement by Cypriot Government Spokesman Konstantinos Letymbiotis, a clear recognition of the country’s enhanced role as a reliable interlocutor and bridge of cooperation between Europe and the Middle East.

As Mr. Letymbiotis notes in his statement, the presence of Cypriot President Nikos Christodoulides at the Summit highlights Nicosia’s coherent foreign policy and is directly linked to the “Amalthea” initiative — the maritime humanitarian corridor from Cyprus to Gaza, which was activated in 2024 and strengthened in 2025. Nicosia emphasizes the country’s geographic proximity and operational capabilities as a “natural bridge” for European action in the post-war phase, something recognized both by the EU and by partners such as the United Arab Emirates, the United Kingdom, and the United States.
