The new road taxes are coming – The amounts, the “green” bonuses and the fines

What you need to know before you join myCAR

Newsroom October 13 04:46

2026 Vehicle Fee “Account” Opens on myCAR Platform

The “account” for 2026 vehicle circulation fees is now open, as the Ministry of Transport (DOT) has activated the myCAR platform to issue notifications by the end of the month. Vehicle owners can either print or pay their fees electronically until December 31, 2025.

The fee amounts remain unchanged; however, late payments will result in surcharges of up to 100% of the original amount.

How the Fees Are Calculated

For vehicles first registered up to 31 October 2010, fees are calculated based on engine cubic capacity:

  • 1,200 cc → €135
  • 1,600 cc → €280
  • 2,000 cc → €690

For vehicles registered between 1 November 2010 and 31 December 2020, the fee is determined by CO₂ emissions, with zero-emission vehicles exempt.

From 2021 onwards, a new scale applies, encouraging the use of “green” cars:

  • Vehicles emitting up to 122 g/km of CO₂ are exempt from the fee.
  • Emissions above 281 g/km are charged €2.85 per gram.

Penalties for Late Payment

Fines are applied on a sliding scale, depending on how late the payment is made:

  • 25% surcharge if paid in January
  • 50% surcharge if paid in February
  • 100% surcharge from March onward

The minimum fine is €30. For example, a fee of €100 becomes €125 in January, €150 in February, and €200 from March onwards.

Before paying or declaring immobilisation, vehicle owners should note the following:

  1. Ownership Date:
The annual fee is charged to whoever appears as the registered owner in the AADE database on January 1st of the year.
  2. Joint Ownership:
In cases of co-ownership, notifications are issued to all owners. Payment by one owner covers all, but if unpaid, all are jointly liable.
  3. Vehicle Immobilisation:
Those who wish to avoid paying the fee may declare their vehicle immobilised through myCAR until the end of the year.
However, driving an immobilised vehicle carries severe penalties:

    • €10,000 fine for the first offence
    • €30,000 fine for repeat offences
    • Driving licence revoked for 3 years
