Emergency meeting of University Rectors: They will request an extension of the deadline for the deletion of “eternal students”

Deletions, according to current schedule, must be completed by December 31, 2025

Newsroom November 3 01:15

An Emergency Meeting of University Rectors has been convened for today, November 3, 2025, at 16:00.

Participation will be online, chaired by the Rector of the University of Thessaly, Professor Charalambos Billinis. The Rector of the University of Piraeus, Professor Michalis Sfakianakis and the Rector of the University of the Aegean, Professor Dimitrios Papageorgiou complete the composition of the new presidium of the Meeting.

The reason for calling the Emergency Meeting is the upcoming student deletions, which must be completed by December 31, 2025 based on the relevant ministerial decision, and then Universities must send the lists of deleted students to the Directorate of Higher Education.

The Rectors are expected to request an extension of this deadline until necessary practical details are completed, such as installation of the required software, according to reliable information from the academic sector. “We are not going to bypass the law, we will proceed with deletions normally, as the law defines. Before that, however, we must exhaust every possibility of attracting as many students as possible to reach their degree, as well as settle some practical issues such as the operation of the required software” they stress, without yet specifying the additional time they will request. In any case, the goal of the Emergency Meeting is to find a common line for all Universities, so they will then request an extension for a specific period from the Ministry of Education.

Aside from the issue of deletion of “eternal students”, the Meeting will also highlight the need to support the Rector of NTUA, Professor Ioannis Chatzigeorgiou, following the police intervention on 14/10 in the occupation of the School of Architecture and the arrest of 15 students. According to what Rector Chatzigeorgiou told protothema.gr: “I applied the law.” His statement is fully aligned with the earlier announcement supporting him, a joint initiative of the Rectors of the University of Patras and the University of Crete. Similar support is expected to be requested for the Rector of the Technical University of Crete, Professor Michalis Zervakis, following disciplinary prosecutions against students.
