In a state of emergency in northern Corfu – Landslides, closed schools, blocked roads and power cuts, see videos and photos

Floods and problems in Western Greece and Macedonia - Strong storms also hit Parga, Arta, Ioannina, Igoumenitsa and Kastoria - When do the phenomena recede

Newsroom November 21 12:53

A decision to place the municipality of Northern Corfu under a state of emergency was taken during a meeting held earlier today at the municipal town hall, attended by the Regional Governor of the Ionian Islands, the Mayor, G. Mahimaris, and the leadership of the Fire Service.

Corfu has been battered by severe weather since midday on Thursday, resulting in significant damage across the northern part of the island.

The same intense storm system also struck Parga, Arta, Ioannina, and Igoumenitsa. Large tracts of farmland in the Kalamas area of Thesprotia were inundated, while the wider regions of Kastoria and Epirus are likewise assessing the destruction caused by the sweeping front.

The extent of the flooding in Corfu is illustrated in images released by Forecast Weather Greece, which show a torrent of water running beside a residential area.

Landslides, closed schools, blocked roads, and power cuts in northern Corfu

Due to the heavy rainfall and the large amount of water in Karousades, an entire slope gave way, resulting in damage to stranded cars and houses that, fortunately, were uninhabited! From Ioannina are already rushing 4 men from the 5th EMAK, with two lifeboats, water pumps, and rescue equipment. In the meantime, the schools in the north of the island will remain closed.

The special bulletin from the National Weather Service

According to the Emergency Weather Information Bulletin (EDECF) issued on Thursday, November 20, 2025, by the National Meteorological Service (EMY), the weather in western-northwestern Greece is deteriorating again.

Today, Friday (21-11-25), heavy rain and thunderstorms are forecasted:

-On the Ionian Islands (Corfu, Paxos, Lefkada, Kefalonia, Ithaca), Aitoloakarnania, and Epirus.

A gradual easing of the strong phenomena is expected from late at night on Friday (21-11-25) to Saturday (22-11-25).

Roads in Filiates of Thesprotia are unpaved – Tons of mud-covered crops

Thesprotia and Ioannina have been hit for the third day by a wave of bad weather. The river Kalamas overflowed, flooding the valley of Vrysella with tangerines. Farmers are in despair as they see their produce in the water during the harvest season.

Crews from the Municipality of Filiata and the Region are in the plain both to survey the damage and for interventions where water drainage is required. Similar problems have been created in the plain of Sayada, with orange groves and mandarins. Crops and rural roads are submerged in muddy water.

In the mountainous provincial network of Epirus, in Konitsa and Pogoni, for yet another day, there are rock falls and landslides, with the municipalities and the Civil Protection operating with machinery to clean the roads.
