Chaos at the Athens Metro after the end of the work stoppage

Hundreds of passengers rushed to use the metro immediately after the work stoppage ended, causing severe overcrowding at the Syntagma station

Newsroom November 26 06:40

Serious traffic problems are reported on the roads of Attica following the emergency work stoppage by STASY from 12:00 to 18:00 on Metro lines 1 (Kifisia – Piraeus), 2 and 3, and the Tram.

Right now, there is heavy traffic on Kifisos Avenue in both directions — southbound from Kryoneri to Aigaleo, and northbound from Moschato to Nea Filadelfeia.

Major issues are also recorded in downtown Athens, where main roads are at a standstill. Notably, drivers traveling from Syntagma to Agia Paraskevi took 1 hour and 10 minutes to cover the distance.

Traffic is crawling in both directions on Kifisias Avenue and Mesogeion Avenue.

There is also congestion on the Attiki Odos highway, heading toward the airport from Menidi to Metamorfosi, while only minor problems are reported on the route toward Elefsina.

Heavy gridlock across the entire basin — Metro, Electric Railway, and Tram services have now resumed.

The station was packed, with passengers flooding the platforms right after trains resumed service. Earlier, long lines formed at ticket booths and entry gates due to the disruption.

Today, STASY (the metro operator) implemented an emergency work stoppage from 12:00 to 18:00 on Metro Lines 1 (Kifisia – Piraeus), 2, 3, and the Tram following the fatal injury of an employee earlier that morning.

The suspension of train services caused significant problems for commuters across the Athens metropolitan area, with heavy traffic jams reported on almost all city roads.

Just before the end of the work stoppage on Wednesday afternoon, hundreds of people were waiting at Syntagma station for train services to resume, as shown in photos obtained by protothema.gr.
