Athens declared on red alert for drought on Friday – Patmos and Leros follow tomorrow

The official announcement from the Regulatory Authority for Waste, Energy, and Water regarding the two islands—and subsequently for Attica—is a matter of hours away — Water reserves in the Mornos reservoir are at historic lows

Athens will be placed on a “red alert” status due to drought starting Friday, with the islands of Patmos and Leros to follow in the coming hours. The official announcement is expected soon from the Regulatory Authority for Waste, Energy, and Water. This decision comes after detailed findings from the Polytechnic University.

Water reserves in the Mornos reservoir, the main supplier for the Athens basin, are at historic lows. If the winter season does not bring sufficient rain to replenish the reservoirs, current water supplies will only last for one year.

Official data reveal the gravity of the situation. According to EYDAP (Athens Water Supply and Sewerage Company), on October 23, 2025, water reserves in Mornos stood at just 156,996,000 cubic meters. This is the lowest level recorded for this date in the last 15 years, marking a nearly 45% drop compared to last year’s reserves (285,021,000 m³ on 23/10/2024).

The National Observatory of Athens also confirms the critical situation. Satellite analysis by Meteo.gr on October 9, 2025, showed that the Mornos lake surface shrank to 8.3 square kilometers — a 44% reduction compared to the average of 14.9 km² during 2016-2024.
