Weather: Showers in the east and south — Stable conditions under ‘Omega block’ pattern

Significant rainfall yesterday in Evia - When is new deterioration expected - The forecast of EMY until Thursday

Newsroom December 8 07:21

The weather will gradually improve over the next few days, according to meteorologists Thodoris Kolydas and Klearchos Marousakis. Local showers will persist until today in the east and south, while from Tuesday most areas will enter a period of sunshine, before significant phenomena return in the middle of the month.

According to meteorologist Mr. Kolydas, “the weather over the next few days will gradually improve as the northerly winds strengthen and remove the phenomena from much of the country.” According to him, until Monday, localised showers will continue to affect the east and south, with occasional thunderstorms in the Cyclades, Crete and areas of the Aegean. In the mountains of northern Greece, there may be some occasional snowfall in the early morning.

From Tuesday, the weather is expected to show a clear and noticeable improvement, as most areas will be sunny with a few clouds, while any phenomena will be limited in Evia, Crete and locally in the Dodecanese. Visibility will be limited in places during the morning and evening hours.”

For the period from Wednesday to Friday, Mr. Kolydas predicts generally clear weather, except Crete, where increased clouds and possible light rain will persist. Northern winds in the Aegean will reach 5-7 Beaufort, enhancing the feeling of cold in the east. At the same time, the meteorologist notes that from the middle of the month, substantial rainfall is expected again, while the temperature will move to normal levels with a slight rise from Tuesday and a temporary drop in the northeast towards the end of the week.

In a post, meteorologist Klearchos Marousakis explains that the prevalence of an “omega” blocker in atmospheric circulation creates conditions of calm, after continuous waves of bad weather that have produced many dangerous rains in several areas of the country. As noted, the atmospheric “mountain” over the central Mediterranean will halt the progress of new bad weather systems and give mild weather conditions for several days. The only exceptions will be persistent northerly winds in the Aegean Sea and cold weather at night and early in the morning.

Marousakis also gives a first impression of the Christmas weather conditions, noting that after this period of calm lasting 5 to 7 days, it seems that the atmosphere will return to a more volatile pattern. As it says, “we are again being driven into a flow of bad weather from the western and northern parts of Europe”, reducing the chances of mild conditions over the festive period. One possible scenario, he said, is the prevalence of rain and snow in the mountains, weather that “goes with the calendar.”

This trend is also reflected in the map he provides from his forecasting system, which shows the type of obstruction that is shaping the current weather pattern.
