The majority of Ukrainians are against the withdrawal of Ukrainian forces from Donbas

72% of Ukrainians are ready to accept a peace plan that provides for a freeze of hostilities on the current front line

Newsroom December 16 11:02

Three-quarters of Ukrainians consider unacceptable a peace plan that does not contain security guarantees and provides for the withdrawal of Ukrainian troops from the Donetsk region and a reduction in the army’s numerical strength. This was shown by a poll conducted by the Kiev International Institute of Sociology between 26 November and 13 December among a sample of 547 people in all the regions of Ukraine controlled by Kiev.

According to the poll, the results of which were published yesterday, 72% of Ukrainians are ready to accept a peace plan that calls for a freeze of hostilities on the current front line and security guarantees for Ukraine without formal recognition of the territories occupied by the Russian military. 14% also reject such a plan.

Only 9% of Ukrainians expect Russia’s invasion to end in early 2026. 14% expect this to happen in the first half of next year. 11% in the second half of 2026, and 32% in 2027 and later. One in three responded “don’t know.”

The poll showed that 63% of Ukrainians are ready to endure the war for as long as it takes. Another 15 percent say they will endure six months or more, 1 percent about a year, and 21 percent could not answer that question.

Their confidence in Zelenski is shown by 61% as opposed to 32%. At the beginning of October the confidence was almost similar 60% and 35% respectively.

Asked about holding presidential elections, 57% said they could be held after a peace agreement is reached and the war is completely over. 25% were in favour of holding elections in the event of a ceasefire and security guarantees. Only 9% of Ukrainians believe that elections should be held even in conditions of ongoing hostilities.
