Newsroom January 20 02:11

United States President Donald Trump has extended an invitation to dozens of world leaders to join the nascent Gaza Peace Council as part of his initiative to promote a multilateral peace plan for the Palestinian enclave. Among the countries that have received an invitation are Greece and Cyprus.

According to Bloomberg, the official list of invitees – based on information from sources with knowledge of the matter – includes 49 countries, as well as the European Commission. As clarified, not all countries have yet confirmed receipt of the invitation, and the list is not considered final.

Aiming to sign the plan in Davos

According to the same sources, Donald Trump wants the signing ceremony of the 20-page Gaza peace plan to take place on Thursday in Davos, Switzerland, on the sidelines of the World Economic Forum. The plan, however, has already sparked opposition, with some of the invited countries calling for a rewriting of key terms of the agreement before any signing.

The invited countries

According to Bloomberg, the countries that have received invitations to participate in the Gaza Peace Council are: Albania, Argentina, Australia, Austria, Bahrain, Belarus, Brazil, Canada, Cyprus, Egypt, Finland, France, Germany, Greece, Hungary, India, Indonesia, Ireland, Israel, Italy, Japan, Jordan, Kazakhstan, the Netherlands, Morocco, New Zealand, Norway, Oman, Pakistan, Paraguay, Poland, Portugal, Qatar, Romania, Russia, Saudi Arabia, Singapore, Slovenia, South Korea, Spain, Sweden, Switzerland, Thailand, Turkey, United Arab Emirates, United Kingdom, Ukraine, Uzbekistan and Vietnam.

At the same time, it was also announced that China has received an invitation from the US government to participate in the Peace Council promoted by Washington for the Gaza Strip.

Putin, Erdogan and Millay on the invitations

Trump himself confirmed that he has also invited Russian President Vladimir Putin to join the Peace Council, which is promoting the US plan for Gaza. At the same time, it has been reported that invitations have been extended to both Argentine President Javier Millay and Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan.

Last week, the White House formally announced the composition of the Peace Council, which will be responsible for implementing the 20-point Trump plan and coordinating post-war reconstruction in Gaza.

The Council will be chaired by Donald Trump himself and will include US Secretary of State Marco Rubio, special envoy Steve Whitcoff, the president’s son-in-law Jared Kushner, former UK prime minister Tony Blair, World Bank president Ajay Banga, and US investors Robert Gabriel and Mark Rowan. Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orban is also in attendance.

According to Bloomberg, the U.S. presidential administration is reportedly asking for at least $1 billion in return from countries that want a permanent seat on the Peace Council, which would not be limited solely to Gaza but would have a broader role in overseeing post-war and geopolitical developments in the region.
