Evi Poumboura tells protothema about her life in the Secret Service and the security of American presidents

Newsroom February 4 10:01

She was born in New York City, the child of immigrants. He joined the Police and from there, the Secret Service, the agency tasked with protecting high-profile people. He stood out and found himself serving the security of three US presidents. As a “shadow” of Obama, he lived inside the White House and met some of the world’s biggest personalities. Greek-American Evi Pumbura has a life story that could be made into a movie. A security analyst at NBC Today, she was in Greece and spoke to Protothema.gr, Proti Leksi (First Word) and Antonis Sroiter about everything she has lived through. The American presidents, the Greek leaders she guarded while traveling in the United States, her tough training, what she experienced in the Twin Towers, and the mistakes made in the assassination attempt on Trump.

Her parents immigrated to the United States, but wanted their child to remain Greek. So Evie grew up speaking Greek. She learned the hard way from a young age in the tough neighborhoods of New York City, where girls also have to fend for themselves. She decided to become a police officer, but she never imagined where the police would eventually lead her.

She was selected as a candidate for the Secret Service and began rigorous training. She learned all the weapons, she learned how to fight, but most importantly, she learned, as she says, to… take a beating. And he ate a lot. He succeeded and got into the service. And from there, as he gained experience, he began to climb the ranks.

He served three American presidents. Bush, Clinton, and Obama. Under Obama, he was on the president’s close security team and became his shadow, one of his closest people. But when Greek politicians came for official visits, she was sent to handle their security because she spoke Greek. She remembers them all, and she remembers … their quirks.

In the attack on the Twin Towers, she was in the building next door that also collapsed. He stayed there to help after the attack and miraculously survived when the first tower collapsed. For what he did that day, he was awarded the highest medal for bravery. You’ll hear her talk about her fictional life, her experiences alongside the most powerful people on the planet, and what really happens in the Secret Service, which we only know through the movies.
