Chefchaouen, (pronounced Shafshāwan in Arabic), in northwest Morocco is the latest exotic destination offered to Greek travelers via economic air packages by aboutickets.com, directly linking Athens with the renowned North African country.
Chefchaouen, which emerged around a mountain fortress built in 1471, is famous for its blue-painted buildings, in some ways reminiscent of traditional architecture on some Greek isles.
The settlement was initially populated by many Moriscos and Sephardic Jews fleeing the Spanish Reconquista in Medieval times as well as encroaching Portuguese invasions of northern Morocco. It was reputedly one of the most secluded sites in Morocco during the pre-colonial tiimes.
